Phil’s meeting had taken a little longer than intended. The manager at the venue wanted to play hardball behind Hale’s back, so it hadn’t been pleasant. Phil had tried, but in the end, he just called the other venue while the manager explained his auxiliary prices and limited hours and booked them instead. So that was decided.

He was fine with it. The much taller, beamed ceiling was better for his ideas for decor, and Brett and Aiden wouldn’t be rushed through their nuptials.

If he was annoyed about anything, it was having to disrupt his afternoon with Anton and Kevin. But the breeze was nice and the radio kind, so he was in better spirits as he made the final turn to head down Anton’s street.

Except he almost got sideswiped by a fire truck, sirens blazing. Recovering from the shock and ear-splitting sound, he checked for any other emergency vehicles that might be speeding by.

Pulling back onto the road, Phil noticed the lights on the truck had stopped. His heart skipped a beat. The arsonist. Anton! Kevin!

The way the truck was parked, Phil had no choice but to stop his car further up the road and run the rest of the way. He saw the remnants of Anton’s perimeter shrubbery being put out. There was almost nothing left of the poor bushes.

Eddie’s hand grabbed his shoulder and Phil probably should have recognized he was yelling at a cop. But Phil still screamed. “Where are they? Is anyone hurt? Have you seen my son?”

Not his most rational moment.

“You seem to be missing your son at a lot of fires,” Eddie - who Phil realized had been the officer at the scene of Anton’s car being assaulted by a flaming bag of poo - kept hold of Phil’s arm as he steered him out of the way of the firefighters. “Looking very suspicious, Mr. Canterbury.”

“You can unhand me, sir. I assure you if I were the one setting these fires, my son would be nowhere near them.” Phil was still not acting smart but he knew himself well enough to know he wouldn’t bother with being polite until he was assured Kevin was safe and sound. And Anton too. The stockier man tried to get his arm back. “So don’t try to blame me for your lack of efficiency. Can’t you see this is escalating? Did you take the letter they left seriously?”

“What letter?” Eddie’s face went from mildly irritated to sharply interested. “Do you know more about this than we’ve been told?”

“For the love of god, Eddie!” One of the firefighters - maybe the one named Mason? - called over to where the cop was borderline interrogating Phil. “His kid is in the house. Let him go. We’re done here.”

“In the house. He wasn’t playing outside when it happened, was he?” Phil felt silly asking. There obviously would have been an ambulance involved if anyone had been injured. But it also could have come and gone. “Sorry. I’m just a bit shaken up.
